VCF Training Workshops: For individuals working with children and families in formal and informal societal systems

The Victoria Climbié Foundation (VCF) delivers specialist safeguarding and reflective practice training for social workers and safeguarding professionals, both nationally and internationally, in partnership with the New African Families Service National and International Network (NAFSNIN).

The training focuses on improving outcomes for children and families from the Global Majority, particularly Black African families, by strengthening practitioner confidence, cultural understanding, and reflective decision-making. It is delivered by experienced, registered social workers and safeguarding specialists, led by Dr (Hon) Amma Anane-Agyei.

Many practitioners currently work with families from the Global Majority using European social work theories alone. While essential, these frameworks do not always fully explain parenting practices shaped outside the UK, the role of extended family networks abroad, or beliefs relating to discipline, spirituality, and health. Used in isolation, this can contribute to misunderstanding, professional anxiety, and interventions that feel disproportionate to families.

VCF training introduces African-centred psychology alongside existing safeguarding models, enabling practitioners to work from two frameworks rather than one. This approach supports clearer, fairer assessments and reduces the risk of cultural misunderstanding being misinterpreted as safeguarding risk.

A key concept explored is the “Two Houses” framework, recognising that many families live psychologically between their country of origin and the UK safeguarding system.

Understanding this dynamic supports more grounded analysis and improved engagement with families.

Training is delivered through small, online interactive workshops (4–6 participants), providing a safe reflective space to consider real cases and the emotional impact of safeguarding work. The approach is supportive rather than judgemental and is designed to strengthen professional confidence rather than add additional demands.

The cost is modest, the learning is sustainable, and the work aligns strongly with organisational commitments to safeguarding, anti-racist practice, and workforce development.
