About Victoria
Victoria’s death was, rightly, a pivotal moment in child protection and children’s services.
Numerous changes were called for in her name but with huge changes across government and society lessons can be forgotten, and decisions around child protection and safeguarding made for political reasons.
Since her death there have been inaccurate claims made about Victoria which VCF have corrected. While it is inevitable that facts can be forgotten as time passes, given that Victoria is invoked to justify measures and policy, the truth matters.
As an organisation we have the memory of Victoria, and the protection of children, at the heart of what we do. With this comes a great responsibility, given that the desire to protect children can lead to measures which cause harm.
The way Victoria was failed must never be allowed to happen again. The wider needs and well-being of children, their families or their communities is key too.
We cannot support an approach or measures which cause unintended harm and continue to advocate for a rights based approach.
