As the leading independent organisation providing effective coordination and links between statutory agencies and the primarily BME community, VCF – The Victoria Climbié Foundation UK is ideally placed to move beyond the current rhetoric for children, with a clear intent to act on the rights of the child by pursuing a practical, common-sense approach to child safeguarding; to tackle inequalities in the delivery of services, and to effectively support children and families according to their needs.
A significant number of practitioners, and organisations are involved in delivering services to meet the needs of migrant children and young people, both at the point of migration and in the longer term. These focus on practical, educational and safeguarding and promoting health and wellbeing.
A public seminar entitled ‘Working with children, young people and families in migration’ planned for 2nd October 2018, will be held at the University of East London. The event is supported by the BME-Migrant Advisory Group (B-MAG) for the safeguarding of children and young people – jointly led by The Victoria Climbié Foundation UK and the Centre for Social Work Research.
Established in the wake of the flow of migrant children from Calais, B-MAG aims to ensure that these children and young people receive support and protection provided by services working to accepted standards of best practice. We offer a multi-disciplinary response to identifying and responding to the very specific needs of these children and young people, including unaccompanied minors coming to the UK, to ensure their immediate and longer-term health and wellbeing.
Failure to respond appropriately in the short-term inevitably leads to longer-term adverse consequences for health and wellbeing. Thus, we continue to call upon policy makers, service leaders and practitioners in all sectors to identify and deliver effective, coordinated services for migrant children, young people and their families.
