Commenting on the first installment of the Munro Review, VCF Director Mor Dioum said:
“We welcome the first part of Eileen Munro’s review into Child Protection. A highlight of the report is her identification of the fact that rules and regulations introduced after high profile cases have failed to lead to long term positive changes. Governments will always be concerned that they have to be seen to be acting when tragedies occur. Children will continue to die but we cannot tolerate children dying in the same circumstances as we’ve seen in the past.
VCF believes that the framework for child protection in the UK is actually a very good one. In 2008, VCF called for better implementation of child protection measures, rather than another massive overhaul of the system. Our concerns lie with the non implementation of corrective measures and the level of bureaucracy that has been introduced, forcing social workers away from their core work with children and families. The government needs to build on the good work that already exists, rather than seeking to introduce even more regulations and measures. Proper utilisation of the tools that currently exist is key.
Implementation, not reform, must be a core part of Professor Munro’s recommendations.”
