Helping Families to become Families Again; a VCF Support Package that improves family co-operation and helps local authorities address the growing number of cases in legal proceedings that perhaps could have been avoided. The Support Package is specifically aimed at assisting local authorities resolve difficulties within families at an early stage. It does not seek to replicate the work of professional staff within the local authority’s care services, but rather, to complement their work, particularly where there may be aspects of culture or faith.

Involving Families in Serious Case Reviews; the multi agency investigations into why a child or vulnerable person has been seriously injured or killed. The purpose of SCRs is for the agencies to learn lessons from what has happened, albeit a difficult time for families who may find it unwelcome during a time of grief. Many families believe that the process will help them to understand how their children came to die – what went wrong, and why – an extremely important aspect of their own grieving to achieve closure. VCF has worked with a number of families through this process and has developed a good practice model in engaging families. We also encourage Local Safeguarding Children’s Boards to genuinely engage families throughout the process.

Supporting victims/witnesses in criminal proceedings; VCF offers independent community-based advocacy support for victims/witnesses required to give evidence at court, particularly around aspects of faith-based child abuse. With our expertise and knowledge of the criminal justice system, together with our advocacy support work with children, young people and families, we are able to work alongside statutory agencies, particularly the Police, to help victims or witnesses to fully understand the judicial system, and to provide practical and emotional support throughout proceedings.
